Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has approved 6.17 acres of land in Hesaraghatta, near Bengaluru, for the establishment of a dedicated Quantum City (QCity). The project is part of the state’s Rs 1,000 crore Quantum Mission, which aims to support India’s broader National Quantum Mission and contribute to building a $20 billion quantum economy by 2035.
QCity is expected to become a hub for advanced research, talent development, and industry collaboration in quantum computing, communication, sensing, and materials. The facility will include state-of-the-art laboratories, incubation spaces for startups, and infrastructure to encourage joint efforts between academic institutions and industry. Officials expect the initiative to attract global researchers and investment, further strengthening Bengaluru’s position in emerging technologies.
According to government estimates, the Quantum Mission could generate more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs in sectors such as cybersecurity, defense, and healthcare, while a dedicated Quantum Venture Capital Fund will support over 100 startups in the field. The plan also emphasizes global collaborations to ensure Karnataka remains competitive in the international quantum research landscape, where countries like the United States, China, and members of the European Union are making significant investments.
The announcement coincides with 2025 being marked as the International Year of Quantum, underlining the increasing global focus on the technology. For Karnataka, the success of Quantum City will depend on sustained funding, measurable research outcomes, and the state’s ability to integrate academia, industry, and policy into a unified ecosystem.
