Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has set up a waste reprocessing plant in PPP mode in Patharghata in Rajarhat.
Using the principle of waste-to-energy, this plant daily processes 170-180 tonnes of waste and produces 155-165 tonnes of raw materials.
These raw materials can be mixed with cement, stone chips and sand and can be reused for construction work.
KMC has decided to sell these raw materials in the open market and the Municipal Commissioner has fixed rates for the produce.
All raw materials prices have been fixed at Rs 849 per tonne. Adding transportation costs, each tonne will cost between Rs 1199 to Rs 1419. These prices will be revised every two years.
The KMC has provided the land in Patharghata, while the sale prices of the raw material will go to the organisation that set up the processing unit.
The KMC will only take the transport cost of sending thr raw material elsewhere from Patharghata. This has been fixed at a minimum of Rs 350 to a maximum of Rs 570 per tonne
In case 150 tonnes are sold daily, this translates into earnings of Rs 52,000- Rs 85,500 to the KMC exchequer daily.
Annually, this translates into Rs 30 crore. In case more waste is processed in thr future, this amount will further increase.
Using these raw materials even reduces construction cost by 15-30 per cent.
