Mumbai: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) have teamed up to participate in the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, India’s indigenous 5th-generation fighter jet initiative. The two companies will jointly respond to the Expression of Interest (EoI) issued by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), which is leading the project.
The collaboration brings together L&T’s expertise in defence engineering and system integration with BEL’s experience in mission-critical defence electronics. Both companies have earlier contributed to the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas programme, where they supplied aero-structure modules, avionics, and electronic systems. Their entry into the AMCA project is seen as a continuation of this role, with a focus on advanced technologies required for a 5th-generation fighter.
AMCA, currently under development by ADA, is designed to carry out both air superiority and deep strike missions. The aircraft is expected to feature stealth capabilities, advanced avionics, and the ability to fly at supersonic speeds without afterburners, known as supercruise. Once operational, it would place India among the few countries with an indigenous 5th-generation fighter aircraft programme.
Industry observers note that the L&T-BEL partnership reflects a broader trend of greater private–public collaboration in India’s defence manufacturing sector, particularly under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The success of this collaboration will depend on how effectively Indian firms can integrate complex technologies and deliver on timelines for the Air Force’s long-term requirements.
By participating in the AMCA programme, L&T and BEL are positioning themselves as key players in shaping India’s future air combat capabilities. Their involvement also underscores the increasing reliance on domestic industry to reduce external dependence in advanced defence platforms.
