New Delhi | Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 26 September, launched Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana and transferred Rs 10,000 each to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women.
The Rs 7,500-crore scheme, introduced by the state’s NDA government, aims to boost women’s empowerment through self-employment and livelihood opportunities ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Addressing the event virtually from Delhi, Modi said the programme would help make Bihar home to the highest number of “Lakhpati Didis” in India. He announced that every beneficiary would receive an initial grant of Rs 10,000 and could later access up to Rs 2 lakh in additional support and entrepreneurial training.
Women can choose to invest in agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, tailoring, weaving, or other small-scale enterprises. The scheme will be community-driven, with self-help group resource persons offering training and support. Gramin haat bazaars will also be upgraded to help market the products.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and state ministers joined the launch, which saw large participation from women across the state. Modi underlined that financial assistance will be provided to one woman from each family, fostering economic independence and social empowerment.
Sharpening his political attack, the Prime Minister said women had “suffered a lot” under previous RJD rule and urged voters to ensure the party and its allies never returned to power. Highlighting other welfare measures such as Ujjwala Yojana, free ration for 8.5 crore people, and Ayushman Bharat, he said both he and Nitish Kumar were committed to improving the lives of Bihar’s women.
