Kolkata: The solid waste management department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has unveiled a plan to deploy battery-powered vehicles equipped with audio systems that will play popular songs to encourage citizens to segregate waste.
Initially, these vehicles will be deployed in neighbourhoods with low rates of waste segregation.
This initiative marks a shift from the existing practice of waste collectors using whistles to alert households.
Currently, KMC conservancy works to collect kitchen waste daily and non-biodegradable waste like plastic, glass and metal three times a week.
Three varieties of songs, including a parody, have been submitted for consideration.
Some wards will be selected in the first phase that are non-performers in waste segregation.
KMC will also retain the whistling system for the time being.
