Agartala: In a major push for environmental sustainability and water conservation, the District Magistrate of North Tripura, Chandni Chandran, has unveiled a first-of-its-kind campaign titled ‘Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra.’
The initiative aims to construct 50,000 soak pits across the district within a span of just two days, scheduled for November 3 and 4, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in Tripura’s efforts to promote groundwater recharge and reduce water wastage.
According to the District Magistrate, the mission is envisioned as a people-driven movement to make water conservation a household practice. The administration stated that the aim is to save every drop of water and turn conservation into a community responsibility rather than a government-only effort. Officials explained that while soak pits are simple structures, they play a crucial role in allowing rainwater to percolate into the ground, reducing water runoff, preventing flooding, and improving soil health, which in turn benefits agriculture.
To set the tone for the mission, a live demonstration of soak pit construction was conducted at the residence of the District Magistrate earlier in the day. Senior officials, including the Additional District Magistrate (PP), the Member Secretary of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), and members of the Swachh Bharat team, were present during the event. The demonstration video has been circulated on social media to encourage citizens to replicate the model in their own spaces.
With the implementation of the Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra, the administration aims to make water conservation a mass movement, aligning with the national call to ‘Catch the rain where it falls’ and ensuring long-term water security for North Tripura.
