Prayagraj: Former Director General of Police and retired Indian Police Service officer Prashant Kumar has been appointed as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), Prayagraj.
A 1990-batch IPS officer, Kumar was appointed as the acting Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh in January 2024 and retired from service on May 31, 2025. He now takes over the leadership of UPESSC at a time when the post had remained vacant for several months.
The position fell vacant after the resignation of the commission’s first chairman, Professor Kirti Pandey, on September 22. Following her resignation, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a circular inviting applications for the post.
As per the appointment order, Prashant Kumar’s tenure as Chairperson of UPESSC will be three years from the date of joining or until he attains the age of 65 years, whichever comes earlier.
The appointment is expected to bring administrative experience to the commission, which plays a key role in the recruitment of teachers and academic staff in higher education institutions across Uttar Pradesh.
