New Delhi: India has so far equipped 23.96 lakh households with rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, achieving nearly 24 per cent of the scheme’s target of installing solar units in one crore homes by FY 2026-27.
According to official data, as of 3 December, a total of 53.54 lakh applications have been submitted on the National Portal and 19.17 lakh systems have been installed, covering 23.96 lakh households.
The demand-driven scheme allows any residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity connection to apply online for subsidies and installation support.
For FY 2025-26, the government has set a target to reach 35 lakh households and has introduced several measures to accelerate progress.
These include a completely online process from registration to direct subsidy transfer, collateral-free loans from nationalised banks at a concessional 6 per cent interest rate and simplified regulatory approvals through the removal of technical feasibility checks and automatic load enhancement up to 10kW.
The government has also added RESCO and Utility-led Aggregation models, streamlined vendor registration and integrated net-metering agreements into the application process.
To boost adoption, awareness campaigns across print, TV, radio and regional media are underway, supported by capacity-building programmes, regular state-level reviews and a multilingual grievance redressal helpline.
