Kolkata: The West Bengal government has taken entire responsibility for implementing the Ghatal Master Plan.
A total of 201 schemes or projects, both big and small, have been designed under the Master Plan.
The entire Master Plan will be completed in two phases. The first phase will include work for 96 schemes, while the second phase will involve 105 schemes.
While work has already begun for a few schemes, the state government plans to work on all the first-phase schemes from the middle of January.
The Finance Department is working in close synchronisation with the Irrigation Department for this purpose.
The 96 schemes in the first phase are aimed at flood control as the main outcome.
Out of these 40 schemes will involve dredging and rejuvenation of different rivers and canals. This will be done on a no-cost basis.
The remaining 56 schemes will include setting up sluice gates, upgrading regulators and pump houses and other infrastructure.
The state government will incur an expenditure of Rs 1046 crore for all these 96 schemes. These need to start in January to be completed in a quality manner in 5 months before the onset of the monsoon.
The 105 schemes in the second phase of the Ghatal Master Plan involve improving communication and travel in the entire area.
There is a separate scheme to reform the Chandraneshwar canal, too. The government will incur an expenditure of Rs 453.59 crore for the second phase.
