Kolkata: Kolkata Police is totally overhauling its cybercrime unit and launching the Cyber Crime Branch through 8 separate units.
In 2024 and 2025, the Kolkata Police received 30,540 cybercrime complaints including digital arrests, fraudulent hotel bookings and social media hackings.
Till date, the cyber Police stations or the cyber cells of divisions used to handle these complaints and their officials used to handle investigations.
Howver, online crimes are more and more differing in nature, investigation modela are also different and there is the issue of golden hour too.
To accelerate investigations, from now on the cyber police station will receive the complaint and subsequently hand it over to one of the 8 branches depending on the nature of the crime.
Each branch will be headed by an officer-in-charge who will be of Inspector rank.
The entire Cyber Crime Branch will be headed by a Deputy Commissioner (Cyber). He will report to the Joint Commissioner (Cyber).
This last position has been newly created and has got the cabinet go-ahead. Even the decision to create the Cyber Crime Branch has been ratified by the cabinet.
