New Delhi, May 22 (APAC Media): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging discussions with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides today.Â
The discussions covered areas like trade & investment, defence & security, maritime & financial connectivity, technology & innovation, mobility, education, culture, and India–EU engagement. They also exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues.
A key highlight of the meeting was elevation of bilateral ties between India and Cyprus to a ‘Strategic Partnership.’
The two leaders exchanged multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to reaffirm their shared goals in the fields of counter-terrorism, maritime security, diplomatic training, innovation, education, and culture among others.Â
The MoUs covered several foundational sectors, aligning digital infrastructure, fintech ecosystems, and research hubs; boosting institutional collaborations, student exchange programs, and joint scientific research; and establishing a firm consensus to finalise a comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement alongside a Social Security Agreement to protect the rights of working professionals moving between both countries.
An MoU to establish a joint working group on counter- terrorism was also exchanged. The two countries formally established a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism to tackle radicalisation and cross-border threats. Furthermore, PM Modi announced targeted defence expansions focusing on cybersecurity, maritime domain awareness, and counter-terrorism operational networks.
