Gujarat, May 18, (CXO Media): India’s semiconductor plans moved a step forward after Tata Electronics signed a partnership agreement with Dutch chip equipment maker ASML to support the country’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat.
The agreement, signed on May 16 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, will support the setup and production ramp-up of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm wafer fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The plant is expected to become India’s first commercial semiconductor fab capable of manufacturing chips at scale.
ASML, a Netherlands-based company known for supplying advanced lithography systems used in semiconductor manufacturing, will provide key equipment and technical solutions for the facility. The company plays a critical role in the global chip supply chain, with its systems used by leading semiconductor manufacturers worldwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU). In a post on X, PM Modi said the partnership could strengthen cooperation in future technologies and support India’s semiconductor ambitions.
The Dholera semiconductor plant is part of India’s wider effort to reduce dependence on imported chips and build domestic manufacturing capacity. The government has increased policy support and incentives for semiconductor investments as demand for electronics, electric vehicles, telecom equipment and AI infrastructure grows in India.
The Tata-ASML partnership comes at a time when India is trying to position itself as a manufacturing destination in the global semiconductor supply chain, amid ongoing geopolitical shifts and efforts to diversify chip production.
