“In line with the “Climate Action” theme of World Environment Day 2026, this campaign, running from June 1 to 5, 2026, focuses on strengthening sustainable solid waste management in rural areas under SBM(G) 2.0, while advancing the spirit of Mission LiFE.”, said Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil.
There will be a special Gram Sabha and the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation drive.
The campaign has been designed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
It seeks to encourage rural communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
It also focuses on creating awareness about Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), behavioral change, waste segregation, recycling, greywater management, and climate-conscious living.
A key objective of the campaign is to make rural stakeholders aware about the newly implemented SWM Rules, 2026, which came into effect on April 1 this year.
This awareness drive will educate households, Gram Panchayats, institutions, and bulk waste generators about four-stream waste segregation along with scientific disposal methods, and management of legacy waste.
The SGSJ campaign will also encourage Gram Panchayats to assess the functionality of community waste management assets.
Highlighting the achievements of the Swachh Bharat Mission, Patil noted that nearly 12 crore toilets have been constructed in rural India.
More than five lakh villages have declared themselves ODF Plus (Model).
He said these achievements have transformed sanitation practices across the country and laid a strong foundation for environmental sustainability.
