Maharashtra Approves Rs 22,611 Crore Mega Infra Projects to Boost MMR Connectivity 

Mumbai, June 10 (APAC Media): The Maharashtra government on Tuesday cleared infrastructure projects worth Rs 22,611 crore, including a tunnel and elevated corridor connecting Ghodbunder Road to Bhayandar, along with the expansion of the Navi Mumbai Metro network. 

The projects are expected to significantly improve regional connectivity and help reduce traffic congestion across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The approvals were granted by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Of the total investment, projects worth Rs 17,036 crore pertain to the construction of a six-lane tunnel between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel and a six-lane elevated corridor extending from Fountain Hotel to Bhayandar. 

An additional Rs 5,575 crore has been sanctioned for Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1A and Line 2.

Chief Minister Fadnavis said the projects would enhance transportation efficiency, improve travel times, and offer a more convenient commuting experience for residents.

The elevated corridor, which will run alongside the Vasai Creek, is designed to support vehicle speeds of up to 100 kmph. 

Officials noted that the project will help ease congestion on the busy Ghodbunder Road while creating an alternate route for traffic moving towards Thane and Gujarat. 

It is also expected to strengthen connectivity between western Mumbai and key destinations such as Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nashik, Panvel, and National Highway-48.

The project will be executed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, supported by viability gap funding from both the Centre and the state government.

The committee also approved the appointment of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the special planning authority for the project area.

According to the statement, the expanded metro network is expected to serve nearly 12 lakh passengers every day in the years ahead.
