New Delhi, June 30 (APAC Media): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday announced that the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been launched in Greece, allowing eligible users to make instant, secure, and low-cost digital payments.
Describing the development as a significant milestone, Goyal said the expanding global footprint of UPI reflects growing confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating technology-driven solutions that strengthen international partnerships and deliver value beyond India’s borders.
India-Greece Economic Partnership
During his visit to Greece, the minister met Eurobank Chief Executive Officer Fokion Karavias to discuss opportunities to further strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
Goyal said both sides explored ways to encourage greater Greek investment in India, while also identifying opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing and infrastructure development in Greece.
UPI Demonstration in Athens
The minister witnessed a live demonstration of the Eurobank-NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) partnership at the bank’s headquarters in Athens.
The initiative enables UPI-based payment services through Eurobank and marks another step in the international expansion of India’s digital payments infrastructure. The demonstration was attended by Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait.
Focus on Trade and Investment
Earlier, Goyal addressed the India-Greece Business Forum alongside Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis, where he also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora.
Highlighting India’s robust economic growth and strong macroeconomic fundamentals, the minister said the country offers significant investment opportunities for Greek businesses.
He also underlined the importance of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), saying it has the potential to boost trade, attract investment, and deepen economic cooperation between India and Europe.
According to Goyal, discussions during the visit focused on promoting co-investment, co-manufacturing, and long-term business partnerships to further strengthen India-Greece economic relations.
