New Delhi, July 31(APAC Media): NTPC is preparing for its biggest expansion yet. India’s largest power producer plans to invest around Rs 17 trillion ($178 billion) by 2037 as it looks to significantly increase its electricity generation capacity while expanding renewable energy and nuclear power.
The state-run company aims to grow its total generation portfolio from about 91 GW currently to 150 GW by FY2032, before reaching 250 GW by FY2037, according to details shared during its annual analyst and investor meeting. The NTPC Group currently has a total portfolio of 127 GW, including 91 GW in operation and 36 GW under construction.
NTPC plans to make renewable energy the biggest driver of its future expansion. It targets 60 GW of renewable capacity by FY2032 and 136 GW by FY2037, compared with around 12 GW currently in operation. The company is also increasing investments in energy storage projects to support the growing share of clean power.
At the same time, NTPC will continue expanding coal-based generation, saying coal, renewable energy backed by storage and nuclear power will remain key pillars of India’s energy security. Its coal-fired capacity could rise from 67 GW to around 91 GW under current plans.
The company is also strengthening its nuclear ambitions. It plans to develop about 6 GW of nuclear capacity by 2037 and has set a long-term target of 30 GW by 2047, while exploring suitable project sites across multiple Indian states.
