Ranchi, July 21(APAC Media): Tata Steel has announced a Rs 10,000 crore investment plan for Jharkhand, with a major share going towards a low-carbon steel project that could reshape its manufacturing operations. The investment, planned by 2028, is also expected to create around 2,000 jobs.
The company will invest Rs 7,000 crore in its HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology project, alongside spending on expanding its Tinplate Division and Combi Mill. The HIsarna project is expected to be one of Tata Steel’s biggest steps towards reducing emissions while cutting dependence on imported coking coal.
A one-million-tonne HIsarna pilot plant is planned at Jamshedpur, where the hot metal produced will be integrated with existing steelmaking operations. The technology has already been tested at Tata Steel’s Netherlands plant and produces around 20% lower carbon emissions than the conventional blast furnace route.
The investment is part of Tata Steel’s wider strategy to expand its India steelmaking capacity from 27.35 MTPA to 40 MTPA. The company is also targeting a long-term global capacity of over 50 MTPA, with most future expansion planned in India.
