New Delhi, August 11 (APAC Media): The Central Government has appointed IAS Gyanesh Bharti as the new Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The appointment comes a day after the Centre approved his premature repatriation from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to his parent AGMUT cadre.
A 1998-batch officer, Bharti had been serving as Deputy Election Commissioner at the ECI since August 2025. His tenure at the poll panel was originally scheduled to continue until June 2028.
Extensive Experience in Election Administration
During his tenure at the Election Commission, Bharti handled significant election-related responsibilities and was closely involved in preparations for elections as well as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Centre had earlier approved his appointment in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
Before joining the ECI, Bharti served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Key Roles in Delhi and Central Government
Throughout his administrative career, Bharti has held several important assignments spanning district administration, municipal governance, Union Territory administration, and central ministries.
One of his prominent assignments came in May 2022, following the reunification of Delhi’s three municipal corporations. He became the first Commissioner of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), having previously served as Commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation from September 2019 to May 2022.
At the Centre, Bharti served as Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat from September 2018 to August 2019. He was earlier Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change from March 2016 to September 2018 and Director in the Ministry of Power from February 2015 to March 2016.
His appointment brings extensive administrative and policy experience to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration.
