New Delhi: The data of around 70 lakh Indian debit and credit cards holders – including personal details, phone numbers and email addresses – has been leaked on the dark web, media reported.

Thankfully, though, the card numbers are not among the leaked details, as per the reports. However, it does reveal the types of user accounts and whether they have switched on mobile alerts or not, news agency IANS quoted Internet security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia as saying.
The dark web is not usually accessed by common people. It is the realm of hackers, cyber criminals, spies etc.
According to the agency report, the data pertains to the period between 2010 and 2019.
“Since this is financial data, it is very valuable for hackers and scammers as they can use the personal contact details for phishing or other attacks,” Rajaharia was quoted as saying.
The researcher inferred that the leak could have happened at the third-party service providers’ end who are contracted by banks to sell credit/debit cards.
He said the data could have been uploaded on the dark web to be sold to someone but later it became public.
