CHANDIGARH: In a first step in the implementation of the RITES comprehensive mobility plan, the UT administration on Friday notified the constitution of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA).
“In pursuance of the National Urban Transport Policy issued by the Centre in 2006 and revised in 2014, the UMTA has been constituted for implementation of the proposal as suggested in the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for Chandigarh Tricity complex in a coordinated and time bound manner,” said a UT official.
The UMTA will oversee implementation of various traffic and transportation measures undertaken by various agencies in the Tricity.
It will ensure an effective public transport system is in place and aim to ensure effective coordination and implementation of various traffic and transportation measures undertaken by departments. The authority will promote and monitor key traffic and transportation projects and deliberate and recommend effective transportation strategies, integrate and consolidate all the action plan of departments and agencies and ensure implementation of traffic and transportation plans for the Tricity.
