Pilani, Apr 29 (APAC Media): BITS Pilani on Wednesday introduced a mandatory social conduct course to promote emotional intelligence and responsible citizenship among students.
The mandatory course has been rolled out exclusively for first-year undergraduate students across its campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai. The programme seeks to address the social and emotional challenges students face during their transition into university life. It is designed as a structured, credit-based programme integrated into the formal curriculum.
“The Social Conduct course encourages young adults to reflect on how their actions shape the communities they live in and equips them with the awareness and responsibility needed to engage thoughtfully with the world around them. “V. Ramgopal Rao, VC, BITS Pilani, said.
The curriculum includes topics such as emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, gender sensitivity, safety, and overall well-being. The prog focuses on developing self-awareness, empathy, resilience, and stress management among students, according to the institute.
“Creating campuses where every student feels safe, respected, and supported is integral to who we are as an institution.” Ramgopal added.
The Social Conduct course follows a comprehensive learning approach and is delivered through an online format. It incorporates interactive modules, scenario-based learning, and assessments to help students engage with real-life situations commonly encountered in academic and social settings.
Social Conduct also introduces discussions on identity, communication, boundaries, and social behaviour, encouraging students to reflect on their actions and attitudes. One important component of the course addresses consent, sexual misconduct, and safety.
It aims to build a more inclusive and responsible environment by familiarising students with campus laws, reporting mechanisms, substance abuse, and recovery pathways.
The course was designed by Striide, an organisation established by Nidhi Chaitra Girish, BITS Pilani alumna (Batch of 2023), and has been fully integrated into the university curriculum.
The move reflects a broader shift in higher education towards integrating behavioural learning with academic programmes, highlighting the growing importance of social awareness and ethical conduct among students.
