New Delhi: Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), will conduct comprehensive testing of the Cell Broadcast Alert System, according to a recent press release.
The aim of this partnership is to improve emergency communication during disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens of India.
“In a relentless commitment to ensuring the safety of the people of India and their communities, the Cell Broadcast Alert System will undergo rigorous testing across various Telecom Service Providers,” the press release said.
The tests will take place periodically across various regions across the nation and determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency alert broadcasting capabilities of Cell Broadcast Systems and Mobile Operators.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System enables DoT to spread crucial and time-sensitive disaster management messages to every mobile device centred in specified geographical areas, to residents and visitors alike. As a result, individuals will receive critical emergency information promptly.
Delivering emergency alerts such as severe weather warnings (e.g., Tsunamis, Flash Floods, Earthquakes), public safety messages, evacuation notices, and other critical information, are some of the regular functions of Cell Broadcast.
Tests are being conducted in different states across India, with testing in Punjab scheduled for September 29.
