Kochi: Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, S Krishnan, recently inaugurated two groundbreaking initiatives at Maker Village, Kochi. The first is the “Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) Sensors,” aimed at fostering the development of intelligent sensor applications within IoT systems. The second is the “India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG),” the country’s inaugural facility dedicated to research and development in graphene and 2D material systems.
Both centres, established in collaboration with the Government of Kerala and Tata Steel Limited, will be situated at Makers Village Kochi. The Digital University Kerala (DUK) and the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET)- Thrissur are the technical partners for these ventures.
The facilities will serve as comprehensive hubs for research and development, incubation, innovation, skilling, capacity building, testing, and certification. S Krishnan emphasised the pivotal role of IIoT sensors and graphene technologies in propelling digital transformation and economic growth. He highlighted that creating ecosystems for startups in these areas is a primary objective of these centres, offering end-to-end solutions from materials to product/system development.
During the launch event, S Krishnan also launched Hardtech 2024, Maker Village’s flagship annual program, designed to bring together leaders from industries, startups, investors, academia, and R&D organisations in the electronics hardware design and manufacturing sector.
The ceremony was attended by Bhuvnesh Kumar Additional Secretary MeitY; Rajesh Singh Joint Secretary & Financial Adviser MeitY, GoI; Dr Rathan U Kelkar, Secretary, Electronics and Information Technology, Government of Kerala; Prof Saji Gopinath, Vice Chancellor, Digital University Kerala; N Sainathan, Chief New Materials Business, Tata Steel; and officials from the Government of India and the Government of Kerala.
