New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affair launched a web portal on Tuesday, a day after notifying of the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), to ease the application process for Indian citizenship under the law. A mobile application named ‘CAA-2019’ will also be launched for people who want to complete the process through their mobile phones.
The web portal provided by the MHA will allow eligible applicants — persecuted refugees of six communities (Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis), who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan — to apply for Indian citizenship. Another criteria under this law says that only candidates who came to India on or before December 31, 2014, can apply.
Following are the list of documents necessary for the application:
- A copy of the passport issued by the Government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- Registration Certificate or Residential Permit issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) in India.
- Birth certificate issued by a Government authority in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- School certificate or Educational certificate issued by the School, College, Board, or University authorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- Identity Document issued by the Government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan, or any relevant Government authority or agency in these countries.
- License or Certificate issued by a Government authority of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- Land or tenancy records in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- Any document indicating the citizenship of the applicant’s parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.
- Any other document issued by a Government authority or agency in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan, confirming the applicant’s origin from these countries.
