New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs recently notified the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) guidelines. The announcement was made on Monday.
The CAA was passed by the Parliament on December 11, 2019. The notification of the rules now allows migrants from neighbouring nations to attain citizenship in India. Since its implementation, the act has sparked widespread protests across India.
The CAA alters the Citizenship Act of 1955, granting Indian citizenship to migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
This decision precedes the onset of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
