Noida, Apr 28 (APAC Media): Major changes in LPG cylinder booking and delivery systems are expected from May 1, 2026, as oil marketing companies prepare to tighten verification norms, improve transparency, and streamline subsidy-linked distribution, according to industry sources.
The proposed system may introduce OTP-based or Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) verification at the time of cylinder handover to ensure only verified consumers receive LPG deliveries, officials said.
“OTP-based delivery is being considered to improve accountability in the supply chain,” an industry official said.
Consumers may face revised booking intervals of 21 to 25 days between successive orders to balance demand and supply pressures, sources added.
Aadhaar-linked e-KYC verification is also likely to be strengthened for subsidy-linked connections to prevent duplication and fraud, industry sources said.
“Reforms aimed at making LPG distribution more transparent will reduce leakages, improve delivery accuracy and ensure consumers benefit from a more reliable system,” he said.
Officials from Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas are reportedly finalising implementation guidelines ahead of the May 1 rollout, with a phased approach expected.
Consumer groups have urged authorities to ensure smooth implementation, particularly for rural households with limited digital access, and called for awareness campaigns on OTP delivery and e-KYC processes.
Authorities said no disruption in existing LPG supply is expected during the transition and that final notifications will be issued shortly before implementation nationwide.
The proposed reforms come amid rising global crude oil volatility and ongoing efforts to digitise fuel subsidy systems across India for better targeting and reduced leakages.
Experts say digital verification systems such as OTP delivery and Aadhaar linkage are expected to significantly reduce diversion of subsidised LPG cylinders while improving supply chain monitoring and consumer trust in the distribution network over the coming months if successfully implemented.
Officials added that consumer feedback will be closely monitored after rollout to address any operational issues and ensure a smooth transition across urban and rural areas nationwide under the revised LPG distribution framework.
The government is expected to issue detailed guidelines before implementation begins on May 1, 2026, ensuring nationwide standardisation of verification and delivery procedures across all LPG distributors, officials said here today in the report.
