New Delhi: The Election Commission of India’s (ECI) C-Vigil app has surfaced as an important tool for voters. Over 79,000 violations have been reported since the announcement of the General Elections, till March 29, 2024. About 99% of these cases have been resolved, with nearly 89% resolved within 100 minutes of reporting.
Around 73% of the complaints are about illegal hoardings and banners. Then, there are over 1,400 complaints about money, gifts, and liquor being distributed. About 3% of complaints deal with property defacement. Out of 535 complaints about firearms display and intimidation, 529 have been solved. Also, 1,000 complaints were filed for campaigning outside allowed times, including using speakers beyond the time permitted.
The C-Vigil app is a major step forward in overseeing elections and making campaigns more efficient. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar discussed its importance during the announcement of the General Elections 2024, urging the public to use the app to report any violations of the model code of conduct or attempts to influence voters.
Through the C-Vigil app users can send audio, photo, or video evidence instantly and expect a response within 100 minutes. Geo-tagging is activated automatically to pinpoint the violation’s location, ensuring quick action. Additionally, the app offers anonymous reporting, ensuring the safety of whistleblowers.
