New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched a two-week online internship program to educate undergraduate and postgraduate students on human rights laws and their application in India. The program, which started on January 27, has selected 80 students from various academic backgrounds across the country.
Focus on Human Rights Education
During the inaugural session, NHRC member Justice (Dr) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi stressed the significance of human rights protection and India’s legal framework supporting it. He urged students to engage actively and use their learning to support marginalized communities.
Devendra Kumar Nim, Joint Secretary at NHRC, provided an overview of the curriculum, which includes lectures and virtual tours of institutions like Tihar Jail. The internship also involves competitions and interactive sessions aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of human rights issues.
Practical Exposure Through Virtual Tours
The program integrates practical learning with theoretical discussions. Virtual visits to correctional institutions and case studies on human rights violations are part of the training, giving students a real-world perspective on human rights enforcement.
Lt Col Virender Singh, Director at NHRC, concluded the session by encouraging participants to apply their knowledge in addressing social injustices.
This internship is part of NHRC’s efforts to create awareness and equip students with the skills needed to contribute to human rights advocacy in India. The internship also provides networking opportunities with experts in the field, allowing students to interact with legal professionals, policymakers, and human rights activists. NHRC aims to use this initiative to build a knowledge-driven approach toward human rights advocacy. Participants are expected to submit reports and assessments based on their learnings during the program.
