New Delhi: The government has directed smartphone makers to pre-install the state-run cybersecurity application Sanchar Saathi on all new devices sold in the country, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen digital safety and curb cyber fraud.
Major smartphone brands, including Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus and others have been given 90 days to comply with the mandate, according to the directive issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Directions have been given to submit the compliance report in 120 days.
A DoT official clarified that “there is misconception being deliberately circulated that this App can not be deleted.. This is baseless”.
However, for smartphones already manufactured and currently in the supply chain, companies would ensure the app reaches users through a software update.
Sanchar Saathi is a citizen-centric cybersecurity platform launched by DoT, offering both a web portal (introduced in 2023) and a mobile application, which went live in January 2025. It provides users with several security-focused services, including blocking and tracking lost or stolen devices; verification of SIM and mobile connections linked to an individual; reporting cyber fraud and suspicious activities; and enhancing device and network protection
The move comes amid rising concerns over digital fraud, identity theft and mobile-related cybercrimes. By making Sanchar Saathi a default feature on smartphones, the government aims to improve user awareness, expedite fraud detection and secure telecom networks nationwide.
