New Delhi: Ashok Chandra has officially assumed the position of Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB). With over 33 years of extensive experience in the banking sector, Chandra brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.
Prior to this appointment, Chandra served as Executive Director at Canara Bank from November 21, 2022, to January 15, 2025. During his tenure, he oversaw key verticals, including Digital Banking, Information Technology, Strategy and Planning, Marketing, Financial Inclusion, MSME, Retail Assets, and Agriculture. He was also a Director on the boards of Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company Limited, PSB Alliance Ltd., and Canara Venture Capital Fund Ltd.
Before joining Canara Bank, Chandra held the position of Chief General Manager (CGM) at Union Bank of India, where he led the Recovery, Legal, and Stressed Asset Management Vertical. He played a pivotal role in reducing stressed assets and was a member of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) Standing Committee on Stressed Assets.
Chandra began his banking career as a Probationary Officer with the erstwhile Corporation Bank in 1991. Over the years, he has held several key roles, including branch and regional leadership positions across India, as well as heading the Dubai Representative Office. His achievements include numerous accolades, such as the Star Performer Award and the Leadership Award.
Chandra holds a Master’s Degree in Economics and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. In 2019-2020, he participated in a leadership program conducted by the Banks Board Bureau in collaboration with IIM Bangalore.
