New Delhi: Walmart has launched pilot programs with three Indian startups—KBCols Sciences, GreenPod Labs, and Cropin—to test innovations aimed at addressing supply chain challenges in its U.S. operations. The collaborations stem from Walmart’s Growth Summit in India, where the startups presented their solutions for enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
Focus on Sustainability and Waste Reduction
The pilot with Pune-based KBCols Sciences explores the use of natural dyes made from agricultural waste as a sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes in textile manufacturing. If successful, the initiative could reduce water and energy consumption in the production process.
Chennai-based GreenPod Labs is testing plant-based sachets that delay the ripening of fruits and vegetables during transit. This technology has the potential to minimize food waste, extend the shelf life of perishable goods, and improve transportation efficiency. Walmart is collaborating with the University of California, Davis, to assess the technology’s impact.
Cropin, headquartered in Bengaluru, leverages AI-based solutions to monitor crop health and optimize yields. The pilot aims to provide Walmart with more accurate data on crop productivity and seasonal variations, reducing waste in sourcing perishable products.
Walmart’s Global Supply Chain Strategy
Kyle Carlyle, Walmart’s Vice President of Sourcing Innovation & Surety of Supply, stated that these pilot projects reflect Walmart’s efforts to adopt innovative, tech-driven solutions for a resilient and efficient supply chain.
The Growth Summit, part of Walmart’s ongoing engagement with global startups, seeks to integrate scalable technologies that align with its sustainability and operational goals. Previous collaborations include partnerships with Agritask and Rubi Laboratories.
Indian Startups Eye Global Opportunities
Startups participating in the pilots emphasized the global relevance of their technologies. KBCols Sciences sees the initiative as a step toward sustainable textile manufacturing. GreenPod Labs and Cropin aim to tackle food waste and agricultural challenges while enhancing supply chain resilience.
This partnership reflects Walmart’s focus on leveraging global innovation to address operational challenges and promote sustainability in its supply chain.
