New Delhi: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s agricultural sector has witnessed unprecedented export growth, with several indigenous products making their global debut.
Meanwhile, India’s pomegranate exports made inroads into the United States with a trial shipment in 2023, highlighting the rising demand for Bhagwa pomegranates from Maharashtra’s Solapur district.
The Northeast region has also benefited from this export surge. In 2021, Assam’s ‘leteku’ (Burmese grapes) reached Dubai, and Tripura’s fresh jackfruit was shipped to Germany.
That same year, Nagaland’s ‘Raja Mircha’ (King Chilli), a GI-tagged product known for its extreme spiciness, was successfully exported to London, marking a major achievement in handling perishable agro-exports.
Another significant milestone was the export of iron-rich ‘red rice’ from Assam to the USA in 2021. Grown in the Brahmaputra Valley without chemical fertilizers, this rice variety, locally called ‘Bao-Dhaan,’ is a staple of Assamese cuisine and is now reaching American consumers.
Kerala’s GI-tagged ‘Vazhakulam Pineapple’ also made its way to Dubai and Sharjah in 2022, promising better income and international recognition for the state’s farmers.
These first-time agricultural exports underscore India’s growing strength in the global market. By facilitating trade partnerships, streamlining logistics, and supporting farmers, the Modi government is paving the way for sustained agricultural export growth, ensuring that Indian produce gains international recognition like never before.
