Bengaluru: In a major step towards enhancing connectivity, the government has announced a direct train service linking Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) with Bengaluru city. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Ministry is working to introduce the service while addressing certain technical challenges that need to be resolved before the launch.
The Current Problem
Currently, commuters can access KIA via Metro Rail, road transport, and K-RIDE suburban rail services. However, the existing airport halt station (Kempegowda International Airport Halt – KIAD) is located 3.5 km from the terminal, requiring passengers to take an additional shuttle bus. Due to poor frequency and lack of convenience, the suburban trains running to the airport often operate empty.
Solution: A Dedicated Rail Line to the Airport
To resolve these issues, Indian Railways plans to construct a short rail line that will run suburban trains directly to KIA. This project is part of a larger effort to decongest Bengaluru’s traffic and improve urban mobility. The railway infrastructure will include a rail-over-rail (RoR) flyover, which features a lower railway track at ground level and another elevated track above it.
Additionally, the new line will be integrated into Bengaluru’s 287-km circular railway project, which aims to build a ring railway over seven key routes, located 25-40 km from the city center. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared for this project.
Parallel Developments in Airport Connectivity
Other projects to improve airport connectivity include the Namma Metro’s 58.19 km Blue Line, which will link Silk Board Junction to KIA via KR Pura, expected to be completed by December 2028. Additionally, K-RIDE’s suburban rail connection from Majestic to the airport is also being planned.
A Step in the Right Direction?: APAC News Analysis
Despite being the third-busiest airport in India, KIA lacks an affordable and efficient public transport system even 17 years after its opening in 2008. Most passengers rely on expensive cabs or BMTC’s Volvo bus services, which often struggle with Bengaluru’s traffic congestion.
While the government’s initiative to introduce a direct train service to KIA is a welcome move, challenges remain. The success of this project will depend on efficient planning, frequency of trains, and last-mile connectivity to ensure smooth transit for passengers. If executed effectively, this project has the potential to revolutionize airport travel in Bengaluru, making it more affordable, time-efficient, and sustainable.
