New Delhi: The central government has appointed Dr Poonam Gupta as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term.
Dr Poomam Gupta replaces Michael Patra, who stepped down from the RBI’s Deputy Governor’s position in January this year.
Government Announces Appointment Ahead of MPC Meeting
Dr Gupta, who currently serves as the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), will assume office at a crucial time, just ahead of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for 7 to 9 April.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved her appointment for a term of three years or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Her selection adds a new dimension to the RBI’s leadership, as she is known for her expertise in macroeconomic policies and financial regulations. As a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and the convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission, she brings significant experience in economic policymaking.
Extensive Experience in Global Financial Institutions
Before joining NCAER in 2021, Dr Gupta held senior positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., gaining nearly two decades of experience in global economic research and financial governance.
She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland, in the US, and a Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.
Her appointment comes at a time when the RBI is expected to make key policy decisions affecting inflation, interest rates, and overall economic stability. As Deputy Governor, Dr Gupta will likely play a critical role in shaping India’s monetary policy and financial regulations.
