Kolkata: The Kolkata Metro’s East-West line will now designate its train services as “up” and “down,” mirroring the convention used by Indian Railways for local trains.
Currently, the East-West Metro runs piecemeal, with one service between Salt Lake Sector V and Sealdah, and another between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan. The link between Esplanade and Sealdah has yet to become operational.
Till now, the services towards Salt Lake Sector V were known as East, while the services towards Howrah Maidan were known as West.
Now onwards, the services from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V will be known as Up and that from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan will be known as Down.
The Metro Railway has also officially announced this change. The Commissioner of Railway Safety is scheduled to inspect the remaining incomplete section between Esplanade and Sealdah on 27 April.
For that purpose, East West Metro will not be running for three days, when new software will be uploaded in six rakes.
With the fire safety sanction too in place, the East West Metro will soon start operating in its full stretch.
