New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country from April to June, with increased possibilities of heatwave days in central, eastern and northwestern regions.
According to IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, these regions are expected to witness two to four additional heatwave days compared to the usual four to seven recorded during this period. Minimum temperatures are also projected to remain above normal in most areas.
As reported, an IMD official stated that northwest India could experience double the usual number of heatwave days.
States likely to be affected include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Karnataka, as well as Tamil Nadu.
April is expected to bring higher-than-usual maximum temperatures to most regions, except for certain areas in the extreme south and northwest, where temperatures may remain normal.
Rising heat stress, driven by climate change, is also anticipated to push up electricity demand across the country.
