New Delhi: Coal India Ltd (CIL), the state-owned coal PSU, has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AM Green Ammonia (India) Pvt Ltd to supply up to 4500 MW of renewable energy for its future green ammonia facilities.
The move reflects CIL’s push to diversify into clean energy while continuing its core coal operations.
Shift Towards Clean Energy
The agreement, signed on 7 May, outlines CIL’s intent to gradually develop and supply wind and solar power across multiple states. Of the total 4500 MW, wind projects are expected to contribute around 1500–2000 MW.
CIL estimates the total investment for the wind component alone to be approximately Rs 25,000 crore. Wind projects are likely to be located in southern states, while solar power generation will be explored in high-radiation regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan.
This development is part of CIL’s broader strategy to align with India’s net-zero targets and to evolve as a diversified energy provider. According to CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad, while coal remains essential for India’s current energy demands, the PSU is working to expand into renewable power to support long-term sustainability goals.
Integration with Pumped Hydro Storage
AM Green plans to integrate the renewable energy supplied by CIL with pumped hydro storage to ensure reliable power for its green ammonia production. The company aims to produce 5 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia by 2030, which equates to about 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, roughly one-fifth of India’s national target under the Green Hydrogen Mission.
AM Green is promoted by the founders of the Greenko Group, a Hyderabad-based renewable energy company. The agreement was signed by Sudarsan Bora, GM (E&M) from CIL, and Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior VP – Business Development from AM Green. Senior officials, including P M Prasad, Mukesh Choudhary (Director, Marketing, CIL), and Anil Kumar (GM, MM & Solar, CIL) were present during the signing.
