New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet has cleared a proposal to offer an additional subsidy of Rs 30,000 for households installing 3 kW rooftop solar panels, aiming to boost adoption of solar energy in the national capital.
State Top-Up to Central Scheme
The new measure falls under the Delhi government’s “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana State Top-Up” scheme, which builds on the central government’s existing rooftop solar subsidy of Rs 78,000. With the latest decision, the total subsidy now reaches Rs 1.08 lakh intended to significantly reduce the initial cost of solar adoption for residents.
The announcement was made following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The scheme offers Rs 10,000 per kilowatt of installed capacity, capped at Rs 30,000 for 3 kW systems. This move is expected to benefit middle-class households looking for alternative energy sources to lower monthly electricity expenses.
Budget Allocation and Targets
A budget of Rs 50 crore has been set aside to support the rollout of this initiative. According to the Delhi government, the target is to install rooftop solar systems on 2.3 lakh residential units over the next three years.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that the state subsidy will operate as an add-on to the central support, streamlining the process and making it more financially accessible for households.
No Upfront Cost for Consumers
To further ease adoption, the Delhi government has partnered with financial institutions to offer loan facilities for the remaining installation costs estimated at around Rs 90,000 for a 3-kW system. This means residents can set up solar panels without making any initial payment.
