Bhuj: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for two major transmission projects and dedicated one completed project by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), with a combined investment of Rs 39,300 crore.
These projects are pivotal to enhancing Gujarat’s transmission network and enabling large-scale evacuation of renewable energy from the Khavda Renewable Energy (RE) Park, one of the largest green energy initiatives in India.
Along with PM Modi, the inaugural ceremony, held in Bhuj, was attended by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, POWERGRID Chairman and Managing Director R K Tyagi and Director (Projects) Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra.Â
The details of the inaugurated projects are as follows:
- The ‘Transmission Network Expansion in Gujarat to Increase ATC from ISTS Part-C’ project, developed for Rs 186 crore, will strengthen grid capacity in the Banaskantha region and ensure smooth power transfer to Patan, Palanpur, Mehsana, and other load centres across Gujarat.
- The Rs 4,200 crore ‘Transmission System for Evacuation of Additional 7 GW RE from Khavda (Phase-III Part B)’ project, executed by POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Ltd., will create a 400 km 765 kV high-capacity corridor from Khavda to Navsari via Halvad and Vataman.
- A completed project by POWERGRID West Central Transmission Ltd., costing Rs 35,000, features a 1,200 km state-of-the-art HVDC transmission line linking Khavda in Gujarat to Nagpur in Maharashtra, enabling the evacuation of 6 GW of green power to the national grid.
These projects are integral to achieving India’s renewable energy target of 500 GW from non-fossil sources by 2030. With 283 substations, 1,80,239 ckm of transmission lines and 5,64,961 MVA of transformation capacity, POWERGRID is playing a significant role in advancing India’s energy transition.
