New Delhi: The Union government has approved a third electronics manufacturing cluster (EMC) for Tamil Nadu, further bolstering the state’s status as a growing hub for electronics production in India.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a virtual address at an event hosted by IIT Madras on 10 June.
Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming Tamil Nadu into a major centre for electronics manufacturing, Vaishnaw said, “One more electronics manufacturing cluster has been approved recently and I hope to see its construction very soon.”
The Union Minister then added that such initiatives would bring the state modern infrastructure and job opportunities.
He also emphasised that Tamil Nadu is seeing significant momentum in the manufacturing of mobile phones, laptops and servers.
He noted that several new projects in these segments are either underway or in the pipeline, aligning with the Centre’s production-linked initiatives to boost domestic capabilities in electronics.
This new cluster follows the announcement made in March 2025 regarding two earlier electronics clusters in the state, involving a total investment Rs 1,112 crore.
Among these is a cluster linked to Zetwerk Electronics’ new manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.
It should be noted that these existing clusters are designed to support the production of components for consumer electronics and IT hardware, targeting both domestic consumption and export markets.
While the Union minister did not reveal the investment size or location of the newly approved third cluster, he highlighted its potential to contribute to the larger electronics manufacturing ecosystem being nurtured in the state.
Vaishnaw also spoke about the state’s strategic role in India’s railway manufacturing efforts. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu is emerging as a key manufacturing hub for high-strength railway wheels, which are now being produced at a factory near Chennai with full support from the Indian Railways.
This adds to the state’s role in assembling Vande Bharat trains, strengthening its position in the national railway supply chain.
