Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has mandated that all new government buildings must meet green building standards, marking a significant policy shift in urban planning. This directive, issued by the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, is part of the state’s broader plan to integrate sustainability into its urban development framework.
Urban Development Year 2025 Drives Policy Overhaul
With 2025 officially designated as the Year of Urban Development, the state is undergoing a strategic overhaul of its urban growth approach. The focus now includes climate resilience, energy efficiency, and long-term environmental sustainability. Officials say the move reflects a shift from traditional construction practices to models that conserve resources and reduce environmental impact.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Gujarat to attend the launch of Urban Development Year. The visit included the inauguration of multiple infrastructure projects and discussions around building climate-resilient cities. While these announcements received national attention, the state-level directive on green buildings forms a critical operational step toward executing these goals.
Institutional Push for Sustainable Construction
DJ Jadeja, IAS, Secretary (Housing), Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, said the green building mandate is not just a regulatory change but part of a structural shift in policy thinking. “Urban development cannot be delinked from sustainability. Our cities must be designed to use less energy, conserve water, and reduce emissions,” he said.
By mandating green standards for government buildings, the state sets a precedent for future urban development. While private construction remains outside the scope of this mandate for now, officials suggest that the new policy could set the stage for broader changes across the urban construction sector.
