Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is setting up geotextile mats as part of the Adi Ganga rejuvenation project in Kolkata.
These special types of mats will be set up on both sides of the Adi Ganga river to prevent soil erosion. These mats bind the soil together.
Initially, this is being taken up as a pilot project on both sides of the Adi Ganga river over a five-kilometre stretch where laying of these may cover or cc block linings have already started.
Geo textile is a special type of textile made from synthetic polymers that is used to enhance soil binding, reduce soil erosion and for filtration of liquid substances. These are normally used in construction activities.
Nowadays, these are being extensively used in different civil engineering projects like building highways, dams or retaining walls.
As part of the Adi Ganga rejuvenation project, all alluvial soil that has been deposited in the Tolly Nullah between Chetla Bridge and Dhandhanya Bridge has been cleared.
During this activity, soil erosion was noticed at several parts of the river banks. As a result, there has been a complete breakdown of the river banks in many places.
These broken areas are to be officially repaired, for which these geo mats are soon going to be used.
First, these broken portions of the banks will be flattened and made plain. Then these special mats will be placed on top of these banks. Subsequently, the concrete blocks will be placed using soil or sand.
For only concrete binding, the soil gets eroded due to the force of the river water. Here, geo-textile mats will bind this soil and prevent erosion.
