Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is setting up an integrated garbage treatment system (IGTS) aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and promote scientific waste management practices.
Accordingly, NFR has started a survey initially focusing on two railway establishments in Guwahati. This survey is being conducted by IIT Guwahati, which has signed an MoU with NFR for the same.
The IGTS would be implemented at NFR headquarters in Maligaon near Guwahati and Pandu Railway Colonies under the jurisdiction of the Lumding railway division.
It is expected to set a benchmark in smart and sustainable waste disposal across railway establishments.
It would focus on segregation at source, scientific disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, composting and recycling measures in line with Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines and national waste management protocols.
During the survey, IIT Guwahati will provide technical consultancy and conduct extensive field studies to assess the feasibility, design and execution.
IIT Guwahati will submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to NFR on completion of the field survey. This will outline the necessary infrastructure, estimated costs, treatment methods and implementation timelines.
The initiative will hopefully reduce the environmental impact of railway operations and create a zero-waste colony model..
