New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal to submit a formal bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2030.
The Cabinet has also given the green light for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and extending the necessary guarantees from relevant ministries and departments. In case the bid is accepted, the Gujarat government will also receive a sanctioned grant-in-aid to facilitate preparations.
If the country secures the hosting rights, the Games will bring together athletes from 72 countries, along with coaches, officials, media representatives and international visitors.
This is expected to provide a major boost to tourism and local businesses, while generating revenue and creating employment opportunities across sectors ranging from sports and event management to logistics, IT, hospitality and others.
Ahmedabad has been identified as the ideal host city. The Narendra Modi Stadium, already renowned as the world’s largest cricket stadium, showcased its ability to manage global sporting spectacles by hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.
The organisers believe that this capacity makes the city well-positioned to believer a successful multi-disciplinary event like the CWG.
Beyond the sporting achievements, hosting the Commonwealth Games is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes, foster greater participation in sports at the grassroots, and strengthen national pride.
