Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will introduce a high-speed Roll-On, Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Mumbai and the Konkan coast from 1 September, aiming to decongest road traffic and improve regional connectivity.
Operated by M2M Ferries, the service will connect Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka with Jaigad in Ratnagiri and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg. The travel time, which typically takes 10–12 hours by road, will reduce to about three hours for Jaigad and five hours for Vijaydurg.
The vessel has the capacity to carry 50 four-wheelers, 30 two-wheelers and several minibuses, allowing passengers to continue their onward journeys with their own vehicles. Ticket prices begin at Rs 2,500 for Economy Class and Rs 9,000 for First Class, while vehicles will be charged Rs 6,000 for cars, Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 600 for bicycles. Officials said the fare structure has been designed to make the service accessible for both individual travellers and families.
Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed that all 147 permissions have been secured and the service will follow international safety standards. He noted that the ferry is expected to be particularly beneficial during festivals such as Ganeshotsav and Holi, when the Mumbai-Goa highway faces heavy congestion.
The project follows the success of the Mumbai-Mandwa Ro-Ro service and is part of a broader plan to expand coastal transport links. Future routes under consideration include Shrivardhan, Mandwa and a direct connection from Mumbai to Goa. The government expects the service to support both tourism and trade while providing more reliable access for Konkan residents.
