Agartala: The Animal Resources Development of Tripura has introduced Artificial Insemination (AI) using Sexed Semen Technology.
This move is aimed at boosting milk production in the state. The department launched AI with Sex Sorted Semen in October 2020.
This made Tripura the first state in the Northeast to adopt this technology. In recognition, the department has been honoured with the Centre for Innovation in Public Service Award.
According to the 2039 Livestock Census, Tripura had 6.16 lakh female cattle. Out of this, only 1.18 lakh were crossbred or exotic.
Since the launch, Tripura has recorded the highest number of improved female calves born through sexed semen AI in India over the last four years.
Up to December last year, 46,746 female calves were born out of 2,58,000 AI procedures conducted with sexed semen.
The initiative began as a pilot in four districts. Today, it has expanded statewide with AI services reaching farmers’ doorsteps.
After the adoption of sexed semen AI in Tripura, it is expected that the milk production will increase by approximately 49,000 tonnes
The milk output will be raised to 2.96 lakh tonnes in 2026-27 from 2.47 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.
