New Delhi: A Mumbai-bound Air India Boeing 777-300ER flight was forced to return to Delhi on the morning of 22 December, after developing a technical problem with its right-hand engine, the Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed.
The aircraft, VT-ALS operating flight AIC 887 from Delhi to Mumbai, experienced a drop in engine oil pressure on Engine No 2 shortly after takeoff, during flap retraction.
The flight crew observed that the oil pressure fell to zero and promptly followed standard safety procedures, shutting down the affected engine.
The aircraft safely returned and landed at Delhi without any reported injuries. The Ministry stated that inspection and rectification of the engine issue are currently underway.
The incident will be formally investigated by the airline’s Permanent Investigation Board under the supervision of the Director of Air Safety (NR), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to determine the cause and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Air India confirmed that passenger safety remained the top priority and that all standard emergency procedures were correctly executed by the flight crew.
This marks a precautionary air-turnback, highlighting the importance of strict monitoring and response measures during in-flight technical anomalies.
