New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the promotion of three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers posted in Jammu and Kashmir to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP). IPS Tejinder Singh is among those promoted to the senior grade.
The other two officers who have received the elevation are IPS Abdul Jabbar and IPS Udaybhaskar Billa. Both have been granted pro forma promotions. The promotions are to the Inspector General of Police rank under Level 14 of the Pay Matrix, reflecting a key step up in the police hierarchy.
According to the order, the promotions will take effect from January 1, 2026, or from the date the officers assume charge of the promoted post, whichever is later. The decision underscores the government’s recognition of the officers’ service and experience in Jammu and Kashmir, a Union Territory that continues to demand a high level of operational readiness and strategic policing.
The rank of Inspector General of Police is considered a senior leadership position in the force. Officers at this level are typically entrusted with overseeing major operational zones, supervising district and range-level policing, or handling important administrative and policy-related responsibilities.
With their elevation to the IGP rank, the promoted officers are expected to take on enhanced roles in strengthening law enforcement, improving coordination among security agencies, and ensuring public safety and order in their respective areas of responsibility in Jammu and Kashmir.
