New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Dehradun District Magistrate and the city’s SSP following the alleged racially motivated killing of a student from Tripura.
The Commission has directed the authorities to investigate the incident and submit an action taken report within seven days. Copies of the case proceedings have also been sought by the NHRC from the Uttarakhand Chief Secretary and Director General of Police.
The victim, Anjel Chakma, 24, a final-year MBA student, was reportedly attacked on 9 December and succumbed to his injuries on 26 December in hospital.
The complainant alleged that the student was targeted with racial slurs after asserting his identity as an Indian citizen.
The NHRC took cognisance of the matter under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, noting that the incident highlighted systemic failures in protecting students from the North-Eastern region.
The NHRC’s notice also directs authorities to ensure the safety of North Eastern students across the state.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with political leaders calling for urgent measures to prevent hate crimes.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured the victim’s family of strict action against the accused.
