Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is reclaiming a portion of the Wellington Square Park from Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation for setting up infrastructure projects.
With the metro utility work at Wellington Square complete, KMC has proposed setting up a water booster pumping station and a health centre for people living in the area and adjacent neighbourhoods.
However, neither KMRC nor KMC has yet to decide on the demolition of a 20-meter-deep shaft that runs below the ground in the park premises.
Such deep construction in porous soil conditions was a challenge that eventually forced the Metro authorities to forgo the plan.
It would also be equally hazardous to raze it without disturbing the ground stability.
As of now, KMRC has decided to keep the shaft, in case the same is ever needed in future.
In fact, KMRC would convene a meeting before the formal handover to KMC.
The land was initially acquired to build an underground station and it was subsequently decided to make way for a ventilation cum evacuation shaft.
Two years ago, the shaft plan was also dropped due to porous soil.
With the Green Line now up and running, KMC will soon get back the land for its infrastructural projects.
The water booster pumping station will supply potable water at uniform pressure to people in large parts of central Kolkata.
The health centre will take care of the needs of patients requiring dialysis.
